Art programs offering patients the chance to connect
As well as brushing up on their drawing and colouring techniques, participants of the art therapy program at the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre have been able to make connections that are expected to last a lifetime.
Art teacher Robyn Hulley has been providing 10-week art therapy programs every Thursday in the Wellness Centre since August last year.
The classes are offered to patients and carers free of charge with funding by the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund.
Since starting the program, Ms Hulley said she has witnessed many participants go through emotional growth and develop better coping mechanisms.
“It’s more from the camaraderie and knowing that they’re not alone, and other people share that same experiences in relation to their treatments, having dealt with the emotional rollercoaster, the physical rollercoaster and everything that goes with it,” she said.
“Just for them to know that in this room, it’s safe and secure, and they know they can talk about anything with people who understand and that means more to them than all the other stuff.”
The fact that the Trust has provided them with quality art materials and I’ve been blessed with the ability to show them how to use those materials and develop a creative side.
Patient Sydelle Phillips said the camaraderie was an important part of the sessions.
“We’re learning an enormous amount and it really gives you something to look forward to each week,” she said.
“We contact one other during the week and share progress, photos and recipes.”
