Thurgoona Golf Club raises $13,000 for Local Cancer Services
A full field packed the Thurgoona Golf Course on the 20th September this year for a great cause. The two-ball Ambrose event was played with the intention that every dollar raised to be donated to the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund.
Fundraiser organiser Peter Nugent was thrilled to see a full field take part. “There was a maximum field on the day. It worked out to be about 170 entrants. The two-ball Ambrose event is a much more enjoyable form of golf too. The first group hit off at about 7:30am and the last group didn’t return until around 6pm. We’re very thankful to the Thurgoona Golf Club Pro Shop for organising registrations.”
Although the course was in fantastic condition and the field was strong, Peter admitted that the golf certainly took a back seat on the day. “I’m not sure there was much stand out golf on the day! But everyone stayed around after for the auctions and paid well above the going rate for the items.
“People knew that the money was going to a great cause and were more than happy to see it as a donation.”
“The day wasn’t about the result; it was about enjoying the day for a good cause.”
Although the result of the golf itself wasn’t important, the final tally after all the fundraising efforts meant everyone was a winner. A staggering $13,000 was totaled from entry fees, auctions items and general donations.
Trust Fund Manager Andrew Mackinlay said that community fundraisers like this one are the backbone of the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund. “What Peter along with the rest of the Thurgoona Golf Club Committee were able to do for us shows the important role community fundraisers play in our mission.
“A lot of time and effort goes into running one of these events, even though on the day it may look easy and well planned there is always a lot of groundwork put in behind the scenes for these to get underway.
“If we were to try and put a monetary figure on the amount of volunteer hours that go into our community fundraisers every year it would be an astronomical figure.”
Asked if there would be another event next year Peter was quick to double down on this year’s event. “We will look at having another again next year, hopefully on a Friday and a little bit earlier in the year so we don’t clash with and football and netball finals.”
The Thurgoona Golf Club Committee would like to thank all of their sponsors, in particular the Liverpool Catholic Club for the success of the event.
