Walk dedicated to former board member
With the sun shining and people wearing brightly-coloured shirts, it’s no wonder the annual Sunshine Walk was one of John Watson’s favourite events.
The fundraiser in support of the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund was this year dedicated to John, a former board member and event Ambassador who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in August.
It included sweat bands for participants which were embroidered with Mr Watson’s name.
His sons, George, Digby and Dugald, and their partners, helped lead out the walks from the Albury Sports Ground.
“Both mum and dad would both just have a smile on their faces if they were here today,” George said.
“Dad loved bright colours, so he’d be happy to see all the people that are dressed up.
“He always had an understanding of what community momentum, both financially and through a show of support did for organisations, so I think he’d be happy to know the cancer centre was in people’s minds.”
Trust Fund chair Michelle Hensel said the Sunshine Walk was “John’s day”.
“He absolutely loved this day,” she said.
“I think he would be enormously proud of his family, and proud of us and what we’ve done.”
