Decades of Friendship and Fundraising: North Eastern Bowlers Keep Tradition Alive

What began as a modest gathering of six teams in 1952 has grown into a thriving community of bowlers aged 60 and over, now boasting 25 teams stretching across North East Victoria and the Riverina.

The North Eastern 60s and Over Bowlers Group has stood the test of time, offering not only friendly competition but also meaningful connection and support for local causes. Open to anyone aged 60 and over, the group welcomes players of all abilities. Many current members are well into their 80s and still enjoying the game, with participation continuing to grow thanks to the welcoming and inclusive environment.

Each year, bowlers from across the region come together for the group’s highlight event: a three-day charity competition that raises funds for local charities and hospitals and, since 2023, the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund.

Club Treasurer Gareth Williams said the decision to support the Trust Fund was a deeply personal one for many members.

“Many of our members have been affected by cancer,” he said. “The decision to donate to the Trust Fund on an annual basis is an easy one. We need to support our local cancer service, because you never know if it might be you needing treatment.”

Since 2023, the group has donated $3,000 to the Trust Fund.

While the competition is officially for over-60s, the club is open to involvement from all abilities, with a focus on community spirit.

“Coming together to enjoy a sport is an important part of living a healthy lifestyle,” Andrew Mackinlay, Trust Fund Manager said. “It’s not just the physical benefits; it’s also the camaraderie and the friendships that matter.”

The North Eastern 60s and Over Bowlers are proudly supported by Savoy Club in Myrtleford and Sundowner Homes, helping to keep the tradition alive for generations of bowlers to come.
